Project Initiative No. 5

The next generation of COUNSELING AND MENTAL HEALTH

A space for EXPANDED MENTAL HEALTH CARE.

The Robert P. Gerholz Center for Christian Counseling was established in the year 1983, as a ministry of the First Presbyterian Church of Flint. The Center was named in honor of Robert P. Gerholz, a prominent developer, philanthropist and member of the church.  The center was established in order to provide Christian counseling services for the church and community. Presently, the GCCC serves hundreds of clients each year by providing professional mental health services by licensed counselors and social workers.

As a ministry of FPCF, the Gerholz Center is housed within our downtown facility. In the last decade, a low-budget renovation effort was led in an attempt to provide better counseling facilities, but the execution of that effort resulted in significant HVAC, HIPPA and general workflow concerns. As a result, the Center has done its best to navigate these challenges while also expanding its services to the community.

With the unexpected reception of a $2M estate gift to the Center, it was determined that now is the right time to address the facility concerns while also expanding the Center’s space in our church physical plant. This past year, the Session approved a plan to invest $750,000 to make these changes and help the Center move into its next generation of service in our community.

More plans and project renderings will be shared as they become available.

As funds for this project are already in hand, we are looking to begin this project’s demolition and construction in late 2025.
