Phase 2 Is underway

The east end of the office complex (June 17).

Here we go!

Earlier this spring, FPCF received word from three different donors that they would be arranging to provide the remaining funds necessary for us to complete our campaign’s renovation efforts in the second phase of our project: Music Wing, Office Complex, Gerholz Christian Counseling Center, and Church Library! Praise the Lord for the generosity of so many in our community!

With the completion of Phase 1: Pipe Youth Ministry Center finishing up and with all necessary funds either pledged or in-hand, the Session authorized the proposal to begin Phase 2. This meant we began a lengthy process of approving final construction documents, bidding out our trade vendors, and submitting our plans to the city for review.

The Facilities Team and Gerholz Committee received a proposal to address some exterior concerns with the safety, security, and building access control for the Gerholz entrance to the church, which were approved wholeheartedly as part of the Gerholz expansion. You can see a rendering of the new entrance to be built below.

Three views of the new entrance to the Gerholz Center from the parking lot. The new entrance will include monitored door access control, lighting, and will limit the areas available for loitering during the day.

We are blessed to be working with two of Flint’s best teams in this phase: Sedgwick+Ferweda Architects and Lurvey Construction. Both teams have been very helpful, communicative, and insightful as we have worked to refine our project scope and ambitions!

The past three weeks have been a frantic time at FPCF during the weeks. All staff were instructed to box up their offices and relocate their belongings to the chapel for storage; the Gerholz Christian Counseling Center had to relocate to the new Pipe Youth Ministry Center; and we needed to donate/recycle a TON of old material, shelving, and other products.

On June 1, we were ready, and demolition began down in the Gerholz Christian Counseling Center, which is receiving a total rebuild and expansion to accommodate its many mental health programs and counseling efforts. Last week, the demo was completed and new steel framing went up nearly overnight!

On June 11, the demolition team began prepping the Office Complex and will be completed with that work next week. Next week, they head to the Music Wing and the Church Library! Note: You may notice the giant “slide” built on the west side of the building—this is a demolition chute that the crew will use to get items down from the second floor safely.

The demolition chute that looks like a very fun slide, at least to my kids.

As of today, all of the projects associated with Phase 2 are due to be completed by December 2026.
